Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) lived primarily in Europe and parts of Asia, adapting to colder climates with stockier bodies, larger noses, and thicker bones. In contrast, Homo sapiens—our direct ancestors—evolved in Africa and spread across the globe, distinguished by their lighter builds, rounded skulls, and more advanced cognitive abilities, including complex language and art. While Neanderthals developed sophisticated tools and may have engaged in symbolic behavior, Homo sapiens displayed superior adaptability, allowing them to thrive in diverse environments. Genetic evidence suggests interbreeding occurred between the two species, with traces of Neanderthal DNA still present in modern non-African human populations. Neanderthals eventually went extinct around 40,000 years ago, likely due to environmental changes, competition with Homo sapiens, or assimilation through interbreeding.
