It is instead characterized by a variety of relief features, both major and minor. Major relief features include: Continental shelf: The continental shelf is the shallowest part of the ocean floor, extending from the coast to a depth of about 200 meters. It is covered with sediments that have been eroded from the continents. Continental slope: The continental slope is a steep slope that descends from the continental shelf to the abyssal plain. It is typically about 4,000 meters deep. Abyssal plain: The abyssal plain is the flattest part of the ocean floor, located at depths of 4,000 to 6,000 meters. It is covered with a layer of fine sediment. Oceanic trench: An oceanic trench is the deepest part of the ocean floor, located at depths of 6,000 to 11,000 meters. They are formed where tectonic plates are subducting, or one plate is sliding under another. Minor relief features include: Seamounts: Seamounts are underwater mountains that rise from the abyssal plain. They can be as tall as 10,000 meters. Guyots: Guyots are flat-topped seamounts. They are formed when seamounts are uplifted and then eroded by waves and currents. Abyssal hills: Abyssal hills are small, rounded hills that are found on the abyssal plain. They are thought to be formed by volcanic activity or by the movement of tectonic plates. Submarine canyons: Submarine canyons are deep, steep-sided valleys that cut into the continental shelf and slope. They are formed by the erosion of rivers and streams that flow into the ocean. Coral reefs: Coral reefs are underwater structures that are formed by the growth of coral polyps. They can be found in shallow, tropical waters. The relief features of the ocean floor have a significant impact on the ocean's climate, circulation, and ecology. They also provide important habitat for a variety of marine life.
