Aligarh Society of History and Archaeology (ASHA) in collaboration with Ganga Jamuni Foundation present a series of talks on ‘Reflections on our Shared Past’ where academics and experts unfold different aspects of history. Hear Prof. Francesca Orsini (SOAS) speak on 'Before the Hindi Urdu Divide'. This talk will focus on the discussions and arguments about the antagonistic divide between Hindi and Urdu in the colonial period and after. The talk will take us to post colonial period in which Urdu got cast as "alien" and Hindi as a "latecomer" implying that before the divide there was a single language. But the fact remains that Khari Boli was written in either Persian or Nagari script. This post colonial assertion of Farsi/ Urdu as an 'alien' or 'outsiders' language does not cover the range of idioms that were used in poetry in North India in the preceding centuries, nor does it take into account the pervasive multilingualism inherent in spaces and people. Join us to know how one should think of language and cultural forms before and after the divide?
