Technical Survey Dogs: Accelerating Safe Land Release in Ukraine | APOPO & MAG

Ukraine is one of the most heavily mine-affected countries in the world. APOPO and MAG are pioneering the use of Technical Survey Dogs (TSDs) to accelerate land release safely and efficiently. By rapidly identifying land free from explosive contamination, TSDs allow demining teams to focus only on hazardous areas — reducing costs, increasing speed, and enabling communities to return home, rebuild businesses, and restart farming sooner. UNDP, MAG, and APOPO are working with Ukrainian authorities to integrate TSD methodology into the National Mine Action Standard for Animal Detection Systems, ensuring safe, standardized, and scalable use across the country.
