A cover story of the start of a nation in Rise of Nations, set to Across the Bog, originally composed by Duane Decker. While I sense that other RTS games like Starcraft and Age of Empires were more popular, I always had a soft spot for Rise of Nations for adding more elements of 4X gameplay into the mix. (As I wrote about in my cover story for High Strung, I was also really inclined to like Rise of Nations because Brian Reynolds, the mastermind behind Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, was also behind this game.) One thing I really appreciated was Duane Decker's fantastic soundtrack, with pieces popping in responsively to what is happening in the game. (If you hear High Strung, for example, then you should definitely be feeling high strung, because something tense is going down.) Pieces like Across the Bog are a bit harder to place -- it's one of the peaceful tunes, for sure, but what else is there to say?
