Chronic headache disorders are a common problem globally and can cause significant disability. It is imperative that clinicians identify key features to distinguish primary vs secondary headache disorders, and initiate appropriate work-up for underlying secondary etiologies when warranted. The International Headache Society has created evidence-based headache criteria for headache disorders that can be easily reviewed using the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3). Most chronic headache disorders are treated with a combination of preventative treatments, rescue treatments, and lifestyle modification. In this video we review the key features of the most common primary and secondary chronic headache syndromes and treatment categories.
