The symptoms: substance abuse, deteriorating health and social life. The diagnosis: addiction. The cure: ? Some diseases are better seen than others. Chicken pox for instance, bright as day, undeniable, unquestionable. Addiction on the other hand, is it as ‘valid’ an illness? Does a drug addict suffer from a disease or did they simply make a wrong-turn by choice? Is substance addiction the only form of addiction one can suffer? Ashraf Azab, a speaker in TEDxGUC Gaps, and the founder of Better Change Halfway House, a rehabilitation center where over 150 people have recovered from drug addiction, discusses how addictions are not in our DNA but are rather, like most medical conditions, caused by a combination of behavioral, environmental and biological factors. Former addict and founder of Better Change Halfway House, a rehabilitation center where over 150 people have recovered from drug addiction. The halfway house functions essentially as a a stepping stone between rehab or detox and the real world ,it is the place that deals with the aftermath of kicking the physical addiction; the place that ensures that addicts don’t relapse. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
