On October 19, Zhou Shen delivered a breathtaking performance singing the theme song Although I Can't See, I Can Hear at the opening program - Sound River world premiere of the Greater Bay Area Cultural and Arts Festival held at the Hong Kong Coliseum (see https://www.gbacxlo.gov.hk/en/program.... Zhou Shen's performance received high praise from industry professionals, the general public, and the song’s composer alike. This highly challenging symphonic poem, Sound River, is the brainchild of renowned contemporary Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun, who spent 12 years crafting this masterpiece. Inspired by the ancient Silk Road, Tan Dun seamlessly weaves together cultural and musical influences from regions spanning Europe and the Arabian Peninsula to Central Asia, culminating in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region. The song's intro features a segment of "Dishui Nanyin," a nearly lost musical style popular in Guangdong during the late Qing Dynasty(about 120 years ago). It is a song style typically sung by blind vocalists, with a mixture of various music styles and genres of traditional folk songs. Zhou Shen’s performance requires a mastery of a dialect similar to Cantonese, capturing the unique intonations and rhythm of Dishui Nanyin. The complex and unconventional vocal transitions throughout this opening segment alone hints at the song's extraordinary difficulty. The song then seamlessly transitions into a fusion of pop, classical bel canto, and even Mongolian folk singing styles. The latter half of the song features a series of five high notes, followed by continuous key changes and throat singing in harmony with the renowned Mongolian vocalist/singer Uyun Tana. The performance culminates in a stunning 21-beat A5 note showcasing Zhou Shen's exceptional vocal range and control. In an interview after the performance, Tan Dun expressed his deep admiration for Zhou Shen, stating that his singing was so moving that it brought him to tears. Tan also praised Zhou Shen's dedication, revealing that Zhou Shen had spent half a year learning and practicing this demanding piece.
