Rufus Wainwright plays his song "You Ain't Big" live in concert at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California on September 12, 2021. You Ain't Big originally appeared on Wainwright's tenth studio album, Unfollow The Rules (2020). He said this about the song's composition: "I originally wrote 'You Ain’t Big' about the strange fact that in the music business worldwide until recently (our estimation has fallen considerably) no matter how well you’ve done anywhere else, if you couldn’t make it in the heartland of the US you weren’t really considered a true star. Think Little Richard, Elvis, the Beatles and Julio Iglesias. However, in releasing this song now which references states such as Alabama, North Carolina, Kansas (where I have had the pleasure of playing shows) and even New York and California, all troubled places during this tremendously turbulent time nationwide, the term 'You Ain’t Big' has taken on additional meanings. The song at heart is apolitical. Its vintage sound harkens back to the classical American country music sound of the 40s and 50s and with the help of opposing images in the video of how different life was for white people compared to black people in the 1950’s, as it has sadly remained, I think it rings appropriate for this time and professes a certain truth." Wainwright is promoting 2020's Unfollow The Rules release, a tour that was postponed for a year because of the pandemic. Joining him onstage were Brian Green (guitar), Jacob Mann (piano/keyboards), and Alan Hampton (bass). ================================= Unfollow The Rules live tour dates (2021): Sept. 9 - Los Angeles, CA @ Greek Theatre (w/ Aimee Mann) Sept. 10 - San Diego, CA @ Humphrey's By The Bay (w/ Aimee Mann) Sept. 12 - Saratoga, CA @ Mountain Winery (w/ Aimee Mann) Sept. 20 - Kansas City, MO @ Uptown Theater (w/ José González) Sept. 21 - Des Moines, IA @ Hoyt Sherman Place (w/ José González) Sept. 23 - Minneapolis, MN @ Northrop Memorial Auditorium (w/ José González) Sept. 24 - Chicago, IL @ Chicago Theatre (w/ José González) Sept. 25 - Carmel, IN @ The Palladium (w/ José González) Sept. 26 - Detroit, MI @ Masonic Temple (w/ José González) Sept. 28 - Washington, DC @ The Anthem (w/ José González) Sept. 29 - Boston, MA @ Orpheum Theatre (w/ José González) Sept. 30 - New York, NY @ The Rooftop at Pier 17 (w/ José González) Oct. 2 - Glenside, PA @ Keswick Theatre (w/ José González) Oct. 3 - Huntington, NY @ The Paramount Oct. 9 - Edinburgh, Scotland @ Usher Hall Oct. 10 - Manchester, England @ Bridgewater Hall Oct. 12 - Sheffield, England @ City Hall Oct. 13 - York, England @ Barbican Oct. 15 - Cambridge, England @ The Corn Exchange Oct. 17 - Southend-on-Sea, England @ Cliffs Pavilion Oct. 19 - London, England @ The London Palladium Oct. 20 - Brighton, England @ Brighton Dome =========================================== You Ain't Big lyrics: You ain’t big unless you’re big in Alabama Don’t know who you are unless you’ve made it in Topeka Gotta get back to Kansas or at least Southern North Carolina You ain’t big unless you’re big in Mississippi Don’t know who you are unless you made it in Wichita Gotta get back to Kansas Or at least Southern West Virginia Doo doo doo ….
