The Song of Accounting Periods Op 103 Composed by Sir Malcolm Arnold in 1969 Soprano – Claire Thompson Piano – Scott Mitchell The late 1960’s was a busy time for Malcolm: the fascinating 6th Symphony appeared in 1967; Peterloo, the colourful and moving overture (really a tone poem) emerged in 1968; most of the Fantasies for unaccompanied wind and brass instruments, the 3-handed piano concerto and a number of films all came during this productive time when he was living in the picturesque Primrose Cottage in St Merryn on the north Cornish coast – just a few miles from Padstow. Also appearing at this time was one of his more eccentric works, The Song of Accounting Periods, Op 103. The idea came from a request from the bass Jon Godber for a song to be included in one of his themed recital evenings, gloriously entitled: 'The Invisible Backwards Facing Grocer'.It just so happened that tax was much on Malcolm’s mind when the request came through, resulting in his unusual choice of text: Schedule 18, Paragraph 9, Sub-paragraphs (1) and (2) from the Finance Act of 1965, Part 5. For those particularly fascinated by the history of tax (of which there are many about) it was the famous act that introduced both corporation and capital gains tax.The song takes the form of an extremely whacky recitative. One that you could well imagine actually happening if parliamentary business was conducted in the style of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Each time the word ‘accounting’ appears Malcolm gives it an absurdly exaggerated degree of decorative embellishment.
