The C2 cars (Fleet Nos 2501-2580) were the last "Legacy Fleet" cars built for BART, and among the first to be retired. This video is just a compilation of the various cars of this series in action. Learn more about the C2 cars here: https://bartcars.weebly.com/c2-cars.html The C2 car history The C2 cars were ordered in c. 1992, at a cost of roughly $1.7 million per car (financed locally), and entered revenue service in 1995 and 1996. They were built by Morrison-Knudsen. Car shells were sourced from Germany, and final construction was at Hornell (first 5 cars) and Pittsburg, CA. My understanding is that this facility is now used to build the new BART Fleet of the Future cars. They were extremely similar to the Alstom built C1 cars (Fleet no 301-450) that preceded them. There were many minor differences from the C1s, and at the end, the most visible contrast was the interior (seats/armrest were different in color, alongside the red ADA lights on the windscreen railing, and brighter lighting in the C2s). They were the bread and butter for the Green Line, alongside a large presence on the Blue line and usually midtrain on the Yellow Line (Hayward and Concord yards). They used the Westinghouse 1463 motor with chopper control, the same type used on BART since the early days. Thus, they had the characteristic buzzing during acceleration and braking. These cars were rather unreliable, sometimes referred to as “bad actors,” and reached their end during the COVID-19 pandemic (with more new cars coming online and the reduced service required only 50 C cars out of 230 C1+C2 cars). They were stored across the system, by May 2020. A train of roughly 8-9 of them was seen testing shortly before the opening of Berryessa and Milpitas. Scrapping wise, 2528 was the first to go in November 2019. At least 7 more have been scrapped, and the number continues to increase. As of April 2021, 45 have been decommissioned. As of September 2021, all C2s were scrapped. I rode 79 of these 80 cars. Although they left shortly before I started taping tons of video, I’m glad to have taken these little videos during the last hurrah of the C2 fleet.
