Stream "Rye Whiskey" here: https://wla.social/sterling Recorded live at Jereco Studios in Bozeman, MT in the summer of 23', this three-track session was created as a donation to Western Landowners Alliance in support their west-wide effort to keep working ranches whole and healthy for people and the environment. Rye Whiskey, an old-time melody, derived from "Jack O Diamonds" and "Drunkards Hiccup", has roots in Scottish and Irish music later adapted by Texas Cowboys and settlers who brought the tune up the trail. The name "Rye Whiskey" was first coined in the 1930's by Tex Ritter but the melody and many of the lyrics predate the 19th century recording. Often associated with an upbeat cadence, my interpretation of these lyrics was much more somber, highlighting tones of alcoholism, isolation, and depression that many of the early western settlers may have felt. I hope to enjoy my rendition of this western tune. The girls that don't like me can leave me alone. I'll tune up my fiddle, I'll rosin my bow, I'll make myself welcome wherever I go. Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry. If I don't get rye whiskey, I surely will die. My horses ain't hungry, they won't eat your hay, So, fare the well Annie I'm goin' away. Your parents don't like me, they say I'm too poor. They say I'm unworthy to enter your door. Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry. If I don't get rye whiskey I surely will die. Way up on Swan Mountain I'm on my own. I'm drunk as the devil so leave me alone. Rye whiskey rye whiskey you're no friend to me, You killed my poor daddy and now you try me. Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry. If I don't get rye whiskey I surely will die. Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whiskey I cry. If I don't get rye whiskey I surely will die.
