#med (Music.Every.Day) Day 10: This is Day 10 of my daily recording challenge. I am posting "Sarabande in D Minor" the Fourth movement of Suite in D Minor (HWV 437) by George Frideric Handel. This piece is from the Level 6 Royal Conservatory Celebration Series (Sixth Edition) Piano Repertoire Book. It is a selection from List A - Baroque repertoire. I love this Sarabande--if you've been a follower of my channel, you'll know that I used it as the basis for a creative challenge--to come up with three and then later four of my very own variations on Handel's theme. D minor is a beautifully expressive key, and I love the chord progression that Handel uses in the piece--weaving between minor and major chords to highlight different moods in this mercurial piece. The theme is mainly chords--the theme is presented in a very clear way. Variation I weaves the melody with an interesting moving counter melody in the inner voices. Variation 2 goes back to the chords in the theme in the right hand, but now the left hand voice has a moving melodic line. The challenge for the student is to make the rests clear in the Theme, and to understand the chord progression. Knowing the chord progression and the harmony will go a long way to helping you understand the structure and memorize the piece. In Variation I - the difficulty is in bringing out the melody at all times and allow the counter melody, while being heard, to be subordinate to the melody. It helps the listener if you can balance the voices and make it clear which voice is which. Variation II: This variation presents challenges in keeping the left hand flowing without stopping between chords. Also, in the 6th edition, very little indication is given for dynamics--it's left to the discretion of the player to put them in so that harmonies are emphasized. One thing that works for me: when a section is repeated, do it quieter (like an echo), build phrases to high points, and bring out interesting harmonies. Tune in tomorrow for another selection! Let's see how far I can take this!
