However, even the greatest hero cannot live every day in the taut tension of struggle. Having temporarily cast off the heavy armor of fate, the hero now walks into the pure and vast embrace of Mother Nature to soothe his exhausted heart. Leaving the rough energy of struggle behind, we bring you a work that paints warm consolation and peace: Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, "Pastoral." We guide you into the fresh forests through the historic 1966 Tokyo live performance by Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker. Surprisingly, this profoundly peaceful "Pastoral" symphony was composed side by side with the intensely fierce Fifth Symphony between 1807 and 1808. At that time, Beethoven was experiencing deep isolation and depression due to his progressively worsening hearing loss. Exhausted by the cold gaze of the world, his only refuge was a quiet country village near Vienna. Whenever he strolled along the forest paths, listening to the sound of the wind and the chirping of birds, he could soothe his wounded heart and draw creative inspiration. For this solitary genius losing his hearing, Mother Nature was the most merciful sanctuary, offering a warm embrace without any conditions. Beethoven's artistic challenge was how to contain this overwhelming emotion received from nature within the strict framework of a "symphony." Merely mimicking the sounds of brooks or birds ran the risk of reducing the music to shallow sound effects. Therefore, Beethoven left a famous note on the score: "More the expression of feeling than painting." He unraveled the reverent and sublime emotions a human feels while residing in nature through solid symphonic logic. This attempt to attempt a warm reconciliation with the outside world became the great seed that birthed the "Program Music" of the later Romantic era.
