Luke 5:27-32 (NIV) Jesus gives an INVITE... and it’s up to us to FOLLOW. 1. The INVITATION to BELONG OPENS the HEART for someone to BELIEVE v. 27-28 Tax collectors were considered ceremonially unclean. They were unfit to ever be used for religious purposes. It disqualified them from being used by God. The LOVE of God is COUNTER CULTURAL because it CALLS SINNERS to FOLLOW JESUS! Romans 5:8 (ESV) -Jesus is for sinners -Jesus is not afraid of a messy past -Jesus will take risks with people Jesus has the ability to look beyond the PROBLEM to see the VALUE in PEOPLE! Stop trying to get things right before you come to Church... Just come to Church and God will help you get things right! At The Avenue… YOU BELONG HERE!" We must counter the lies of Hell with the grace and love of God. Romans 8:1-2 (NLT) You don’t BELONG so you can keep living how you want. You BELONG so that you can experience Grace! Grace does NOT give you PERMISSION to keep living a life of SIN... Grace gives you ANOTHER CHANCE so you can DEFEAT IT! 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV) You BELONG so that you can BELIEVE... and once you BELIEVE... you BECOME different than who you were. 2. FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS should be INTENTIONAL about INVITING others to EXPERIENCE JESUS v. 29 At The Avenue... WE REACH PEOPLE! We will go the extra mile for Christ... and think outside the box! Matthew 5:13-16 (MSG) Mark 16:15 (NLT) As believers... we have a responsibility to invite others to FOLLOW JESUS with us. Someone else’s MIRACLE is simply WAITING on you to SHARE your MESSAGE with them! Your PAST does NOT DISQUALIFY you from God’s PURPOSE! It’s your PAST that gives your MESSAGE... POWER! 3. The WORLD needs a FAITHFUL Church FULL of FOLLOWERS who will NEVER GIVE UP on PEOPLE v. 30-32 By Jesus going to this party and hanging out with sinners... this would have made Him unfit for ministry. As followers.... we must continue to fulfill the Great Commission by going into the world… never giving up on people! v. 30 At The Avenue… OUR CHURCH ISN’T FOR US! We don’t exist for ourselves... we exist for the World! v. 31-32 Jesus did NOT COME to PACIFY the RELIGIOUS ELITE... He came to RESCUE PEOPLE from HELL! Luke 19:1-10 (NIV) HERE’S THE BIG IDEA... When the WORLD WRITES people OFF because of their PAST... The CHURCH must RESPOND with God’s LOVE to REMIND them that their story is NOT OVER!
