The Best Trotting Float Ever?

Peter Drennan was making fluted trotting floats by hand out of balsa wood and elderberry pith back in the 1950’s. Back then, they were designed to sort of ‘grip on the water’ and help pull line off a centrepin reel. The 'extra grip' also helped keep your float on track, trotting downstream in a straight line. Instead of the float getting dragged back toward your own bank by a belly in the line, or particularly when you lifted and mended line. The original Fluted Trotters were not only difficult to make by hand, they were pretty fragile. Nearly 70 years on, these new blow-moulded models are ultra light and buoyant and at the same time, extra tough and durable.
