The Warrior's Path: An Interview with RFLX Student Guy Knauer

The impetus to begin training in the martial arts is different for everyone. For some, it's as practical as self-defense and for others, it's simply an effort to lose weight. For Guy Knauer the decision was different. After being diagnosed with Leukemia in 2013 at the age of 47, the happily married, father of four was faced with a life-changing reality. While news like this would normally disrupt a person's psyche to the point of self-pity and inaction, Guy is a different animal. As he says, rather than donning a comfy pair of sweatpants and relaxing on the couch, feeling sorry for himself, he decided to tap into his desire to live life to its fullest. What became clear to him was that in order to overcome his disease and its many obstacles, he would have to learn to adopt a fighter's mentality. He would have to challenge himself and his body to remain healthy even through the toughest of situations. Guy is now a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu at RFLX Training Center Lafayette and continues to be an inspiration for all of us, no matter how tired we feel, to get out and train.
