Make a potscrubber in the woods... from a weed??

Horsetail or scouring rush is a very common plant that can be foraged from wet areas all over the northern hemisphere. It has been used to scrub dishes and sand or polish wood for centuries and is a great bushcraft solution for cleaning up or doing the dishes at camp. It can be located in abundance in sandy wet areas. Using it to clean up at camp or remove rust from a knife or axe is as easy as gathering up a bundle and going to work. It collects rain water in its segmented sections and can also be used as an indicator to locate springs or seeps where water can be obtained. It is still sold and used to sand and shape reeds for woodwind instruments like clarinets and saxophones and it also used in Japanese woodworking to finely sand or polish wood. This plant is super useful as a totally natural bushcraft solution for scrubbing up in camp. Horsetail, or scouring rush or rough horsetail or snake grass grows all over north america and europe. It likes wet sandy places and is extremely common throughout most of its range. It is actually a type of fern so it reproduces with spores and it gets it name either from this fertile structure that it produces which looks kind of like a horsetail or from this other common member of the horsetail family that looks quite a bit like a horsetail. It has ridges embedded with silica which is what makes it great for scrubbing and sanding things. Indigenous peoples of the northwestern plateau in modern day idaho, montana, and british columbia also made a tea from it which they used as a diuretic and to treat venereal disease. Today it is still used to shape woodwind instruments like saxophones and clarinets. It is still used in traditional japanese woodworking where it is typically boiled, dried, and used as a fine polish. The dark parts between each tube section are the leaves, and each section is separated from the next. Sometimes rain water will collect inside the sections. A lot of survival guides include this as a tip to find water, but horsetail occurs only in fairy wet areas. Yes you can drink the rainwater but if you’ve found some chances are there is plenty of water around to boil up. A more useful tip is, if you see a bunch of horsestail and there’s no water around you have probably located a spring or seep which you can dig down into and find water. Harvesting clip: So when you’re going to harvest some horsetail I actually don’t recommend that you cut it with your knife because the whole point of this plant is that it is good for scrubbing because it is embedded with abrasive silicates. So maybe don’t run the cutting edge of your knife all over this abrasive stuff like we did or you’ll end up having to sharpen it. Since this plant is supposed to be a fine abrasive I decided to try using it to remove some surface rust on this carbon steel knife I wish I hadn’t bought since I am surrounded by lakes and it has to be kept oiled all the time or will instantly start rusting. It actually worked great. The rust came off pretty quickly, leaving just the black patina underneath behind and it didn’t scratch the metal up all that much.
