Lord Headley, a notable convert to Islam took the first initiative to build a proper Masjid in the heart of London in the early 1900’s. Between 1900-1930 several efforts were made to get permission from the British government to build a mosque in central London. Unfortunately, Lord Headley passed away in 1935 and the project was temporarily stopped. In 1940 Lord Lloyd, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, sent a memo to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, in which he pointed out that London has more Muslim population than any other European capital. He also pointed out that in the whole British Empire there are more Muslims than Christians. He suggested to PM Churchill that it would be a good diplomatic gesture if the British Government could provide a site for a mosque in London for the Muslim community and that it would have a good effect on the Arab countries in the Middle East. When King Farouk of Egypt agreed to donate a land in Cairo to the Christian community to build an Anglican Church, then in return, King George VI also agreed to donate a land to the Muslim community of Britain to build a Masjid in London. A prime 2.3 acre location was chosen in the heart of Regents Park for the purpose of this Masjid. In 1944 a Mosque Committee was formed and The Islamic Cultural Centre which includes the London Central Mosque, was established and officially opened by King George VI. However, despite the Islamic Cultural Centre opening during World War II, it was many years until the Masjid eventually opened its doors due to the bureaucratic process and difficulties of getting the necessary building permits to construct such a building.
