Mid of security STORYLINE Local residents in Peshawar reacted to the Friday bombings that claimed the lives of 13 people, saying they no longer feel safe and their children are afraid to go to school. Three suicide attackers, including a woman, attacked a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing 13 people, including three police officers, two women and two children, said a local police official. Another 15 people were wounded. "Before we were living in Karachi and people were saying let's move to Peshawar because there is peace there, compared to other cities. Now Peshawar is the one bad city in the region," said Abdul Rehman. Schoolboy Safi Ullah echoed his remarks. "I want to say that we are very much afraid due to the daily bomb blasts. We can't even go to our schools, we don't know if we go outside what will happened to us," he said. Friday's twin bombings targeted a heavily fortified police station in Peshawar, the main city in the northwest. One attacker drove a car filled with explosives to the main gate of the police station, as a motorcycle carrying a man and a woman pulled up behind it, Peshawar police chief said. The woman jumped off and ran toward a nearby housing complex where army officers live, while the man smashed the motorcycle into the car, which exploded into a huge fireball, he said. Police shot at the woman, who detonated explosives she was wearing. The blast destroyed part of the police station and a mosque next to it. The attack came a day after militants launched coordinated attacks on three law enforcement compounds in the country's second-largest city of Lahore, killing 19 people as well as the nine attackers. Also Thursday, a car bomb in Peshawar killed a small child at a housing complex for government employees. Pakistan meanwhile launched a much-awaited ground offensive in the al-Qaida and Taliban stronghold of South Waziristan early Saturday, officials told The Associated Press, the toughest test yet in the nuclear-armed U.S. ally's struggle against militants aiming to topple the state. The ground offensive comes on the heels of months of airstrikes that have softened up militant defences and spurred tens of thousands of civilians to flee the region along the Afghan border. The full-scale operation also comes after two weeks of militant attacks that have killed more than 175 people and ramped up the pressure on the army to take on the insurgents. The army has tried three times since 2001 to dislodge Taliban fighters from South Waziristan.
