Time for another Chic production! Sheila was not well known outside of Europe, so I was really surprised to hear that Edwards and Rodgers got behind her and created this gossamer ode to a space hero. She was born August 16, 1945 as Annie Chancel and got her stage name from her cover of Tommy Roe's #1 hit, "Sheila" her first release. Her version peaked at #3 on the French Pop Chart. Producer Claude Carrére found her when she was 16 so her parents signed a contract for her that resulted in a 20 year association. She immediately hit and had three songs in a row top the charts in 1963. She regularly charted in the Top 5 and had many #1 hits that were all sung in French and also recorded some of these songs in Spanish, German and Italian. By the time she decided to record in English, it was 1977 and she put together a group, Black Devotion, shortened it to Sheila & B Devotion. The focus was on recording disco music which is when the Chic boys got involved. They wrote and produced an entire album entitled "King Of The World" and the first song issued was "Spacer" a disco shuffle that topped the French Pop Chart in 1979. The song was released worldwide and it peaked at #44 on the US disco chart and completely missed the Hot100. While you probably never heard this one, it has all the Chic elements of a hit, the heavenly strings, that backbeat and supple bass with that wonderful guitar throughout. I hope you enjoy this underground Chic tune.
