Foundation and purpose Founder: Abraham Lincoln Lewis, the first Black millionaire in Florida and president of the Afro-American Insurance Company, purchased the land to create a beach resort for African Americans. Segregation context: During the Jim Crow South, it was one of the few beaches where Black people could legally and freely swim and recreate, as many other public beaches were off-limits or had discriminatory ordinances. The community and its legacy "A place of joy": American Beach became a popular destination known as a "place of joy" and a symbol of Black determination and community. "The Beach Lady": MaVynee Betsch, Lewis's great-granddaughter, was a prominent figure who fought to preserve the beach and its history for future generations. Preservation efforts: Today, efforts are ongoing to protect the historic beach, with the A.L. Lewis Museum serving as a central hub for its history. The beach is the first stop on Florida's Black Heritage Trail
