THE LIFE OF QUEEN MARY I reached its peak when she finally ascended to the throne in 1553 after the death of Edward VI, but it was no easy task to get there. First she had to effect the downfall of Lady Jane Grey, whose supporters had tried to put the 15 year old Protestant in Mary’s place. In this week’s Mary I documentary from History Calling (the ninth in my Tudor Monarchs’ series) we begin by answering the questions, how did Mary I become queen, despite the odds being stacked against her? From there we’ll look at how the first Queen of England to successfully hold the throne went, over the course of a five year reign, from a beloved figure to a tyrant remembered as Bloody Mary and ask the all-important question, why did Mary I burn people to death? We’ll also look at Wyatt’s Rebellion, at how bad the relationship between Mary and Elizabeth Tudor really got and return to the story of Mary I and her Spanish family, which culminated in her marriage to Philip II of Spain. We’ll investigate why it was believed by everyone, including the Queen herself, that Mary was pregnant when in fact she was not and finish in 1558, when the tragic life of Mary I came to an end and the Elizabethan era began. Others topics examined during this study of the reign of Mary I will include Mary I and religion, especially her attempts to reverse the English Reformation and re-establish Catholicism as England’s primary faith and how this led her to become, for many people, such a terrifying queen.
