The Southern California Horticultural Society welcomes naturalist and environmental consultant Stefan Campbell as our guest speaker. He shares stories and photos from his plant explorations throughout Latin America, focusing particularly on xeric plant habitats in Mexico and South America, and species that could do well in Southern California landscape gardens. Campbell is an Australian naturalist with an academic background in Applied Science. He developed a fascination for cacti and other exotic plants from a young age and currently lives in Chile, where he works as a botanical guide, as well as in Argentina and Mexico. Independently, he researches cacti and desert ecology. In this evening’s presentation, Campbell will take us on a journey through some semi-arid environments in Mexico’s Sierra Madre Oriental, and parts of the Andes in Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Argentina, as well as the coastal Atacama Desert. He will show us unusual and exotic xerophytes and wildflowers in situ that could do well in outdoor gardens in Southern California. Plant families he will cover include: Cactaceae, Bromeliaceae, Malvaceae, Asteraceae, Montiaceae, Oxalidaceae, Crassulaceae, Bignoniaceae, and Amaryllidaceae. We will be seeing many beautiful photos from Campbell’s travels – like the images shown here – and might possibly come away with ideas for interesting specimens to try planting in our own gardens. More information (and photos) about his explorations can be found on his website at: www.cactusexplorer.com and also on his Instagram account where he is the @cactusexplorer_ and on YT at @cactusexplorer
