This work by Gottschalk is truly astounding. It's one of those works that should be as famous as Chopin's Fantasie-Impromptu, Op. 66 (posth.), but, unfortunately, faded into obscurity, just like the genius who penned it. There's a furtive, perhaps oblique, reference to Chopin's e-minor Prelude. In the 'B' section of the work, the left hand crawls from D7 to an F7, perhaps inspired by Chopin's Prelude, if not a nod to it. The introductory note to the work (as seen in some other works of his) hints at the comparisons. "Chopin it is well known transferred the national traits of Poland, to his Mazurkas and Polonaises, and Mr. Gottschalk has endeavored to reproduce in works of an appropriate character, the characteristic trait of the Dances of the West Indies."
