Even though I made a few changes to the Treant, I want to put a disclaimer here: I’m not going to change every single monster that has an attribute that doesn’t make sense. My changes to creatures might seem random and nonsensical, which is fine. I like keeping my players on their toes and enjoy running different monsters than those suggested in the Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Monster Manual. I like Treants because they’re very useful at establishing the whole “actions have consequences” for players who are careless with destructive abilities, evocation magic, etc. They’re hard to kill and you can theoretically spawn an unlimited number of them to make a point. I personally haven’t done this, but my players don’t usually muck about in forests. Except with blight crystals. Yeah. Sigh. There are a lot of variants on Treants, mainly corrupted trees. You’ve seen them in places like Curse of Strahd and my campaign even had a blight tree. I don’t know if I plan to have another blight crystal or Blight Tarrasque (no promises, though) in my campaign, but the idea of a blighted woods is something I find really fascinating. How much do the Treants and druids clean it up? Do they fall to corruption? Is it really just left to some adventurers to figure out?
