Join us for the launch of Safer drug laws for Aotearoa New Zealand: Evidence to inform regulatory change, a major new report being released by the NZ Drug Foundation to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 becoming law. The report is being launched at Parliament and presented to the Cross-Party Mental Health and Addictions Wellbeing Group of MPs. -- In the 50 years since the Misuse of Drugs Act became law in 1975, drug use and drug harm have changed dramatically. In Aotearoa, the last decade in particular has been marked by major shifts in the drug supply, a surge in the use of drugs like methamphetamine, and increasing risks of harm from potent, novel, or misrepresented substances. Overseas, many jurisdictions have moved to enact legislative reform. This report considers the growing body domestic and international evidence, along with findings from engaging with communities in Aotearoa who have directly experienced drug harm, to present a comprehensive suite of recommendations to make our drug laws safer. The report was developed with the generous support of the Michael and Suzanne Borrin Foundation.
