Was really fighting the wind on this one, Clipstone Colliery was a major Nottinghamshire coal mine (1922–2003) known for its iconic, 60m+ tall Grade II listed headstocks—among the highest in the world—and central powerhouse. Developed by the Bolsover Colliery Company, it was a highly productive site, later operated by the National Coal Board and RJB Mining. Location: Situated in Clipstone, Nottinghamshire, it played a key role in the regional coal industry. History: Sinking began in 1912 but was delayed by WWI, with operations starting in 1922. The pit was modernized in the 1950s to reach deeper seams, including the Low Main seam. Production: It was highly productive, producing around 4,000 tons of coal daily by the 1940s and nearly 1 million tonnes annually at its peak. Closure: The mine was closed by British Coal in 1993, briefly reopened by RJB Mining in 1994, and finally closed in April 2003. Site Status: The distinctive headstocks and powerhouse remain as listed, protected structures.
