(A song I wrote but AI sang:) POV: You wake in your royal quarters, still drunk on the afterglow of victory over the Vampire King. Sleep clings stubbornly to your bones—until the screams shatter the silence. In an instant, you’re on your feet, seizing your sword as instinct takes over. Hallways of torchlight and banners blue past until you crash into the hallway of the throne room entrance, drawn by the sound of panic. Two vampires crouch over the dead bodies of your guards outside the doorway. You charge them down without hesitation, your blade flashing; they die in a spray of dark red. Mere seconds after they fall, a boot catches your chest and the world slams you backward. The throne room doors fly open with the force of your impact and you tumble inside. You manage to scramble to your feet, but your breath catches at the sight before you. "Impossible..." you breathe. You had seen him fall. You had seen him die. But here he stands in the center of the hall, wrapped in shadow and contempt, his green eyes bright with wicked amusement. The air around him chills your bones. Torches gutter as if the light is afraid to touch him. Behind him, suspended in a globe of rushing water, is your wife, the Queen. Her hands claw at the surface as she gasps inside, trembling. Tears cut clean lines down her face as she locks eyes with you through the hazy water. The eyes that were just laughing with you hours ago now shine with raw terror. “Let her go!” you roar. The Vampire King just smiles as he looks from her back to you. From his coat he draws a silver watch and opens it. Its ticking swells as he pulls it out, the sound bouncing off the stone until it feels like the room is a drum beating down your ribs. “You have a choice,” he says, voice low and smooth. “In four minutes, if the rest of my army in the woods does not receive our agreed upon signal, they will scale your walls, burn your houses, and turn your people to my brood." The distant sound of your peoples screams pierce the night at his words, faint at first, then rising in waves of terror. You can hear the desperation in their voices as they beg the vampires to be let go, their cries echoing through the marble halls. A cold certainty settles in your chest — your people are being held hostage below. "Or...you stand here and watch her drown. And your precious kingdom remains standing." “No,” you whisper as your chest tightens at his words. "I will not play your games." He steps closer, his grin widening. “You already played the hero,” he says, “Now you have to pay my price.” His words are cold and deliberate. Every second slices away as your thoughts try to control themselves. If you kill him, she dies, there is no mage near to counter his vampire magic. If you spare her, your kingdom burns. Your kingdom will burn if you spare her. "I will take both if you don't choose." Tick, Tock. Every beat drives a nail deeper into your resolve. He stands there smiling, hungry for the moment of your choice. His eyes track you like a hunter measuring the last seconds before the kill. You can feel his pleasure as a cold weight in the air, as if the room itself leans toward him. “One must burn,” he says, his voice soft, wicked. “Or one must drown.” Tick, Tock. The Queen’s fingers press against the globe and the ripples catch the torchlight. She mouths your name with the kind of faith that feels like a prayer. Outside, you imagine the people who cheered last night, the ones who still believe you to be their shield. Their voices are a ghost behind the stone, unaware of the choice being carved into the world this very breath. "I just ask for one, your love or your crown." Tick, Tock. He moves so fast you do not see it. One heartbeat and he is before you, hands like iron. Your sword is torn from your grasp so cleanly that it feels as if something of you goes with it. Pain sharpens your vision. Your ribs flare, the breath forced from you in a sound that could only be a sob. He sets the watch between his fingers as if it were a trinket, not the instrument of a massacre. The ticking continues, indifferent. "A true hero would not stumble at this pick." Tick, Tock. You taste copper on your tongue and remember promises you swore on this very floor. You remember the first time she touched your hand and the way the whole world seemed to steady. You remember your father’s face when he told you his was proud of you, as the crown was settled upon your head on your naming day. The memories line up like banners to be trampled under the weight of his ultimatum. "Now tell me hero," he says. "What is your choice?"
