Check out the article I mentioned here: https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/25/21... (It also talks about the Eastern European influence on Half-Life 2's City 17, pretty cool stuff) Credit to Kinolibrary and Footageforpro for the Soviet archive footage. Kinolibrary: / @thekinolibrary Footageforpro: / @footageforprocom Hello there. Welcome to Russia. But this isn’t the Russia you or I know. This is a specific kind of Russia that we keep seeing more and more of in gaming. It’s a dangerous, almost uninhabited wasteland filled with supernatural and human threats alike. We have seen iterations of this concept in various survival games. DayZ, Tarkov, the metro series, hundreds of smaller games like Chernobylite, and of course, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series. These games share so much DNA because of their setting that it has almost created a sub genre of survival games. This bleak, industrialized space gives out such a strong vibe that it has permanently injected itself into the survival sphere as its own kind of game. But why? Why is it so appealing that multiple games have iterated on this same concept and we flock to it every time? That is what I want to take a look at. twitch: twitch.tv/garblery subscribe much more to come soon --------------------------------------------- 0:00 Intro 1:46 Post Nuclear 3:14 Post Soviet 4:40 Post Apocalyptic 6:17 How did it all start? 9:07 Conclusion 10:21 Outro
