Parents and educators often attempt to protect children from the experience of failure and disappointment, feeling these are damaging or traumatizing. But they neglect a basic reality: Failure is a normal part of the world for which we are preparing young people. It isn't just an occasional occurrence; failure is the norm. Whether in dating, job applications, business startups, or other spheres, success on first attempt is rare. If failure is taken as abnormal, traumatizing, or indicative of one's worth as a person, then it will be avoided in the only way possible: By not attempting anything outside the zone of comfort. We need to accustom ourselves to failure and de-signify it in order to live a fulfilling life, and part of that involves deliberately exposing young people to normative failure early in life.
