Burkina Faso's Transitional President Ibrahim Traoré has emerged as an extraordinary leader with rapidly growing popularity despite facing persistent coup attempts, a backlash from Western powers, and violence by terrorist groups. To some, his charming charisma within and outside the West African country is exceptional, defying known political logic. Since taking power in a September 2022 coup, Traoré has risen from an obscure military officer to an anti-imperialism icon in Africa - often challenging Western hegemony, taking initiatives to deconstruct colonial mindsets and assert his country's sovereignty. Traoré, the world's youngest head of state, has also launched anti-corruption drives, makes efforts to take greater control of Burkina Faso’s mineral riches from Western dominance, and established local factories, particularly agro-allied ones. Under his leadership, Burkina Faso has severed ties with former colonial ruler France and other Western countries while building stronger relations with Türkiye and Russia as alternative partners. This is a stance he has taken along with the leaders of Niger and Mali, who also came to power following military takeovers. The leader, known for donning a distinctive red beret and military fatigues and an iconic fist greeting trademark, has gained popularity well beyond the borders of the country of 23 million people. So, why is he captivating people locally and internationally, and how does he surmount the challenges he faces? TRT Afrika explores the expanding Traoré factor. #trtafrika #burkinafaso #traoré
