Gary Joseph Lelli, MD, of the Department of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medicine discusses surgical options currently available to treat thyroid eye disease due to Graves’ disease. Graves' disease is an immune system disorder that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism). A significant portion of persons with Graves’ disease – up to 50% – will also have eye problems, commonly referred to as thyroid eye disease. Surgical options for persons with thyroid eye disease can involve up to three different forms of surgery, often spanning several years. The first surgery is the removal of bones or adipose tissue surrounding the eye. That may be followed by a second surgery, to adjust the musculature around the eye. Finally, a third step may include eyelid surgery.
