January 20, 2024 Sylvia Puente, president and CEO of the Latino Policy Forum, moderated a panel discussion on meeting the challenges in K-12 education for Latinas. The panel featured Ana Graciela Nájera Mendoza, staff attorney at the ACLU of Southern California; Laura Chávez-Moreno, assistant professor of Chicana/o and Central American studies at UCLA; and Maria Echaveste, president and CEO of the Opportunity Institute. Latina students in K-12 public schools and their families face a range of challenges in their quest to obtain a high-quality education. Anti-immigrant sentiment and policies are strong. School officials continue to enact obstacles to enrollment for immigrant and perceived immigrant children, and conservative activists—most notably Greg Abbott, governor of Texas—are taking aim at the US Supreme Court’s 1982 holding Plyler v. Doe, which allows undocumented children to attend public school. This panel explored the obstacles facing Latina students in K-12 and identified best practices to face them head on. Latina Futures: Transforming the Nation through Law & Policy took place at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center on January 20 and 21, 2024. The symposium was designed by a national, multi-generational planning committee and sponsored by the Latina Lawyers Bar Association, UCLA Chicanx Latinx Law Review, and Latina Futures 2050 Lab.
