This episode of the series “Folks” from February 21, 1988, features Sonya Masingale’s report on the Gifted and Talented program in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Her report touches on the characteristics of gifted students, the decrease in black student enrollment in the program, and the concerns about the testing procedures for students to get into the program. She interviews: Rochelle Williams, a gifted teacher at Park Ridge Elementary School in Baker; Dr. Mary Louise Jones, the chairwoman of Minority Services for the East Baton Rouge Gifted and Talented Association; Aeneid Mason, the coordinator for Pupil Assessment for the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board; and Pam Millican, an elementary school counselor and the mother of a gifted child. Masingale also conducts an in-studio interview with: Gerald Lively, the president of the Baton Rouge chapter of the Association for Gifted and Talented Students; Dot Rumfellow of the East Baton Rouge Gifted and Talented Program; and Lois St. Amant, the director of Upward Bound at Southern University in Baton Rouge.
