PRE-COLUMBIAN CULTURES 3: Mesoamerica (3/3) - Toltecs, Tarascans and the Aztec Empire HISTORY OF AMERICA The post-classical period of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica was characterized by the migration of peoples from northern Mexico, perhaps from the western United States. Some of them were the Toltecs, the Chichimecas and the Aztecs or Mexicas. While the Toltecs formed a civilization with capital in Tula and raised pyramids with Atlanteans, Tarascan purepechas founded the kingdom of Michoacán. On the other hand, the Mixtecs obtained a supremacy over the Zapotecas, especially thanks to its king Ocho Venado. But undoubtedly the most important of this period are the Aztecs. These people allegedly came from Aztlan and founded Tenochtitlan in Lake Texcoco, and from there they expanded through much of central and southern Mexico. They had no rival until the arrival of Hernán Cortés.
