Here's a walk through of how I like to store my fig trees in the winter. Potted fig trees should always be protected from freezing temperatures as the roots and top growth may receive severe damage which can set back growth and even kill them. Fig trees will naturally go dormant and growing ceases when temperatures start to drop for an extended period of time. The leaves will turn beautiful yellows and browns and will drop from the tree. Monitoring weather conditions is key in order to time the storage correctly. Figs can tolerate a frost which will actually kick them into gear and force dormancy in the event that they had not started. When freezing temperatures are expected to hang around for a long period of time, this would be the time to start bringing in your potted fig trees. Mature fig trees can tolerate temperatures down to about 20F. In ground trees can tolerate it better than potted trees so it is a good idea to not gamble when a freeze is expected. Once Spring arrives and the last threat of frost has passed, the trees will go back out to beging waking up. Some winter stored trees may begin to wake up and put in new growth well before the last threat of frost. They may even display some lanky growth but they will be fine to wait. Its is labor, but isn't all gardening? That's the fun part. Moving your body and breathing clean outdoor air. Blessings to all. #gardening #pottedplants #pottedgarden #figs #fig #figtree #winter #winterprotection #growyourownfood #grow #breathe
