HABANERA DE JOVENCITA, a dance of colonial-era origin from the Maria Clara suite of Philippine folk dances. During the Spanish colonization of the Philippines, many aspects of the Spanish culture were brought to the Islands, including the Catholic faith, clothing, and dance. This included various forms of European dances, which were adapted into the Filipino dances that we know today. This era and suite of Spanish influenced dances is referred to as Maria Clara. A dance typical of a woman’s debut or even her wedding. The accompanying love ballad was written by Maestro Nitoy Gonzales when he was courting Jovita Friese, who then choreographed the graceful and beautiful habanera dance that accompanies it. Jovencita means “young lady” in Spanish.. The Habanera de Jovencita was performed by the La Kwerdas Music Ensemble together with the UPLB Sandayaw during the UPLB National Heritage Month at the "Muli, Sandayaw" concert held at UPLB Baker Hall.
