Lyricist Raj Shekhar recently crossed the milestone of 100 released songs. It was only while revisiting tracks that had gone uncredited that the number struck him. A self-proclaimed accidental lyricist, he never set out to write songs. He simply wanted to create something meaningful. From Tanu Weds Manu to Saiyaara and Aap Jaisa Koi, his journey has been filled with highs and lows, but it’s the audience's love that continues to drive him. His breakthrough came with Aanand L Rai, whom he considers a mentor. Tanu Weds Manu was a turning point, opening doors to long-standing collaborations, including his creative equation with composer Vishal Mishra. The two now share a deep understanding of each other’s process. In Aap Jaisa Koi, Raj was involved from the first draft itself, working closely with director Vivek Soni. It was a true exchange of ideas, not a situation where a lyricist is handed a tune without context. Similarly, his work on Saiyaara with Mohit Suri was marked by collaboration. Suri’s history with music and his hands-on involvement in the studio elevated the process without ever being overbearing. Raj has also worked with industry giants like Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra, and while suggestions did come in, he sees them as valuable insights from veterans who understand what makes a song click. At the same time, he often requests directors not to over-brief or flood him with references. In every track, he makes sure to include a line just for himself. There was a time when the lack of credit would leave Raj frustrated, especially when he had to fight for recognition. But with things slowly changing, he believes lyricists must now step up and take more agency in how their work is acknowledged.
