Is Europe still a continent built for families? Or is it becoming a place where starting a family is a luxury that only a few can afford? We have analyzed the data, and the evidence we found is nothing short of shocking. We have already made rankings of European countries taking into account salaries and the cost of living, but those were focused on a single person. Today, however, the analysis becomes much more complex, and much tougher! We have calculated the real income of a family of four in each European country and compared it with the cost of living. For this first analysis, we made a crucial decision: to exclude the cost of housing. Why? Because in Europe there are three different worlds: those who live in a fully paid house, often inherited; those who are paying off a mortgage; and those who rent. Including everything together would have created an unrealistic ranking. But we want you to decide the next step. If you want to see this same ranking including housing costs, write “HOUSE” below in the comments. And here is a preview: the ranking will look completely different, and for many, much worse. Welcome to Amazing Europe! _____________________________________________________ METHODOLOGY FOR FAMILY INCOME CALCULATION To calculate a realistic average income for a family of four, we went beyond a simple 'salary x 2' approach. Our method combines three key elements for maximum accuracy: 1. The Average Net Salary: We start with the average net monthly salary for a single individual in each country. 2. The 'Family Multiplier': Instead of simply adding a second full salary, we applied a 'family multiplier'. This coefficient is calculated for each country based on its female employment rate and part-time work prevalence, providing a much more accurate picture of a household's actual earnings. 3. Child Benefits: We then added the average monthly state financial support a family with two children receives. This is a crucial part of a family's real disposable income. METHODOLOGY FOR COST OF LIVING (NUMBEO) The cost of living figure from Numbeo is a standardized estimate designed for accurate cross-country comparison. It represents the monthly cost of a 'standard basket' of goods and services for a family of four. This includes estimated expenses for groceries, transportation, utilities, and leisure activities. Crucially, this figure excludes housing costs (rent or mortgage) and other major variable expenses like childcare, ensuring a more consistent baseline for comparison across all countries.
