Amritsar: Panic grips bus stand as armed transporters clash

Panic gripped Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra Inter-state Bus Terminus on Thursday, after two groups of various transports clashed with each other and indulged in firing in the air. Visitors ran helter-skelter to save themselves. The miscreants damaged glasses of three buses. Senior police officials, with a heavy police force, rushed to the spot immediately. They nabbed three persons from the spot and initiated further investigation. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Harpal Singh said the police was scrutinising CCTV cameras to identify suspects and arrest them. He said a couple of gunshots were fired in the air and the two groups were armed with weapons. He said a dispute over the timing of Ferozepur route was the reason behind the incident. Harpal said the dispute was between New Deep bus service and Baba Budha bus service owned by a senior SAD leader. Recently, Regional Transport Officer changed the timings which led to the dispute, he said. The ADC said he had a talk with the RTO last day and had called both groups for settling the dispute. However, on Thursday, they clashed and damaged the buses. Neeraj Kumar, SHO of Rambagh police station, said the police had registered a case under Section 336, 341, 342 and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, besides Section 25 of the Arms Act against over 20 persons from both groups.
