E92 BMW 335i Genuine Owners Review & Buyers Guide

Hello and welcome to my owners review on the E92 335i, undeniably the best looking of the E90 range, reminiscent of the E46 shape but smoother with a subtle aggression. If you’re looking to buy one the first thing you’ll be aware of is your own budget, and if it’s a small budget like mine was then it’s probably a good idea to double it for the inevitable repair bills down the line. I managed to scrape this 2006 non M sport model and no I drive for £3250. With a service history described as full but with a 40k gap and no receipts this actually surprisingly has been a very well looked after car in its own way. I just had it MOT’d at a garage renowned for doing MOTs by the book with no advisories at all. You’ll notice straight away it’s not on original wheels which was a down point originally however upon research the standard wheels are very prone to cracking and I have seen them advertised with as many as 5 repairs! Anyway back to budget. If you’re looking at spending between 3-6k you’ll be looking at high milers and this is what you’ll want to look out for. Before we even start with the common issues take a look at the tyres and brakes. Are the tyres premium, how old are they and how much tread are left, this is an easily avoidable £500 bill straight away as are the brakes. The tyres can be a valuable insight as to how much the previous owner really looked after the car, I’m not saying avoid any on budget tyres but it’s something to consider when deciding if a car is worth buying. Don’t forget to look for the manufacture date on the sidewalls. Now the common faults and the reasons you may wish to double your budget. The most notorious of which are the turbos wastegate rattle causing a loss of boost and the dreaded 30FF code causing the turbos to stop working until you restart the car. I changed them on this myself saving me from a huge labour bill, the turbos cost £600 to be reconditioned including uprated actuator arm bushes. You can expect to hear rattling for the first 2 minutes after the car is started from cold so request that the car you’re looking at be cold upon arrival. It’s deciding how excessive the rattle is and asking the owner if the car goes into limp mode when allowed to boost fully. If a fast test drive yourself it off the table then ask the seller if they will accelerate fully through the gears. Boost leaks are possible on any turbo car but these are the most likely causes of the error. The second possibly more common issue but often left unresolved is the rocker cover gasket leaking. I changed this myself and the part was £280 from BMW, there are cheap versions available for as little as £70 but in my opinion you get what you pay for and the BMW version is a kit ready with all new bolts and the new gasket already in place. The gearboxes appear to be pretty solid on BMWs but on automatics check for any fluid changes in the history and when driving assess the gear changes for any lurching or delays down changing. This car drives much better in sport mode and tends to be a little more unpredictable driving steady in normal mode. Possibly a characteristic of the box and not a dealbreaker but worth noting. Make sure the paddles on the steering wheel are working too. Ignition coils can also be an issue if you’re experiencing misfiring and these cost around £200. Body parts are far from cheap on this car so if you’re looking at tidying one up needing bumpers or panels do your research. Obviously if you want to buy one on a budget then you will save bundles being very handy with a spanner, despite the very difficult jobs undertaken on this 15 year old car in that very cramped engine bay the only seized bolts I had were on the exhaust and subframe brace. It’s been an absolute pleasure to own this car but yet more budget considerations are running costs. Early models are near enough £600 a year to tax (the same as my friends R8) and if you enjoy the sound of the exhaust with the windows down as much as I do expect to see as little as 200 miles per tank and 400 on long distance drives, I’ve had as much as 36mpg out of this car. In 2010 BMW switched to a single turbo and the tax cost nearly halved with improvements in emissions, apparently this didn’t eradicate some issues with the high pressure fuel pumps which I haven’t encountered so can’t comment from experience. There are more possible common faults so please check other sources. Other than the impending doom of possible issues this is a wonderful car to experience, likely to appreciate, a much more affordable and tuneable alternative to the M3. Mine not being an M sport model is a great mile-eater the handling isn’t necessarily bad however I do have more confidence in my Diesel 1 series M sport when it comes to handling.
