16th September 2024 Each day flying here generally has similar conditions, but around the season transitions there are extra things to look out for. The wind to the front of take-off was cycling, in strength and direction - flicking from S to SE, ranging from 8kt to 14kt, much like a thermic site e.g. Manilla NSW. It was also flicking up and down...this is notable as the majority of days at Stanwell consist of mainly of laminar airflow from the sea, with the ocean being an excellent storyboard of what is coming. This day, the ocean was showing barely anything. There were white caps off to the SE approx 30km away, that's it. The visibility was excellent. In the 'up' cycles, the windsock showed enough strength for soaring flights, however these cycles were short lived and almost every pilot ended up on the beach when they ended. I ventured into the valley, where conditions can always be expected to be different to the front of the hill; mixture of thermic and soaring. However today it was only thermic. Strong lift and strong sink; gliding was barely possible. This is probably due to the high pressure system pushing air downwards, in addition to the sinking air surrounding thermals. As a result of this sinking air, a smooth top landing was a gamble, and as you can see I decide to land on my bum because of some sink at the last second. I probably could have landed on my feet, but my dodgy knee said 'dont you dare'. Biggest takeaway from today; never assume conditions are the same as your last flight
