The Surprising Reason Glass Jars Have Dots on the Bottom!

Why do glass containers have ridges or raised dots on the bottom? It’s not just a decoration - it’s a lot more! DirtFarmerJay solves the mystery! #GlassContainerDesign #GlassJarDots #GlassMakingProcess #ThermalShockPrevention #GlassManufacturing #EducationalVideo #GlassBottleDesign #IndustrialDesignSecrets Have you ever noticed that all glass containers have a ridge of raised bumps around the perimeter of the bottom? It looks cool and could be mistaken for a mere decoration, but they are so much more than that! Many glass containers are made in the same facility where the product is being bottled or put into jars. There are significant benefits to this approach, including eliminating crating and shipping costs for the glass products, as well as having clean containers that are essentially sterile due to the high temperatures at which the product was manufactured. The container is formed by blowing a molten slug of glass into a mold, creating a cavity inside with air that presses the glass into the shape of the mold while making the open space within the container. This happens very quickly, and the glass begins to cool and solidify very quickly. As the mold opens, the newly formed glass container is placed on a moving conveyor belt. The belt in this section of manufacturing is usually comprised of metal slats. The glass is still very hot, and sudden temperature changes put the container at risk of thermal shock, which can cause it to crack or otherwise compromise its integrity. What to do? One could heat the conveyor belt system, but that is impractical. The simple but elegant solution is to reduce the amount of contact with the cooler metal components of the conveyor. This is done by making a ring (or corona) of raised dots or sections around the perimeter of the base, while raising the bottom of the container into the interior. This limits the amount of contact and resulting transfer of heat and cold, and allows the jar to cool without cracking. That’s not all. Because the bottom is no longer flat, suction is eliminated, making it resistant to automated sliding and handling. This also reduces friction, making it easier to move the container through various bottling and packaging operations. In some operations, companies get further benefits by using some of the dots and marking to denote various manufacturing information, such as product contents, dates, plant location, and so forth. Clever, huh? JUST DO IT YOURSELF!
