Alycia Kamil is a 24 year old multi-disciplinary artist, educator, and freedom fighter from the South Side of Chicago. Alycia’s artistry is grounded in the quintessential nature of Black women’s spirits and brilliance that define the determination and liberation of Black minds. Alycia’s community organizing work shows the world how individuals are able to coalition build, strategize, and finance for the sake of self-governance, community care, and individual radicalization. Her artistry reflects aspects of blackness across the diaspora. Alycia’s work calls black people home in our bodies and minds to be able to accumulate the strength, knowledge, and grace in order to sustain the movement of what black lives are. In this conversation recorded on December 10, 2024--Alycia and I reflect on her transition into adult hood as a former youth organizer and how art and self exploration can foster the spaces needed to liberate ourselves as we grow and then world as it follows. Thank you to Alycia for being a Sister, companion, and fiery spirit to myself and in the conversation for others to hear and witmess. If you wanna check out more of Alycia's current happenings.. Alycia's recent projects compose of Mixed Media Art work , Youth- Led Programming, Exhibition work with The Art Institute of Chicago, and an upcoming Workshop with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
