Grace Kelly's entrance in Rear Window (copyright Universal Pictures, 1954) has been called 'the most perfect entrance made by an actress on film', and rightly so. According to Hitchcock’s associate producer, Herbert Coleman, ‘it was the most beautiful shot of a woman I have ever seen in my life.’ In this fantastic, suspensful movie, a professional photographer, L.B. Jefferies (James Stewart), in a wheelchair with a broken leg after an accident at one of his assignments, is asleep in his apartment. Suddenly a sinister shadow falls across his face, which puts us slightly on our guard. Hitchcock cuts to a shot of a stunningly beautiful blonde coming into seductive close-up. He then cuts to a close profile shot almost in slow-motion to accentuate the dreaminess of the atmosphere as hero and heroine kiss. ‘Who are you?’ asks Jefferies, jokingly. Taking up the playful tone, the heroine introduces herself - ‘Lisa... Carol... Fremont’, on every part of her name switching on a lamp as if to emphasise the warmth and light she has brought into the room. Once all the lights are on, we as the audience can fully appreciate Grace Kelly.. and THAT dress. There are multiple copies of this scene on YouTube, but nobody seems to have gone to the trouble of doing it in proper HD, even though the Hitchcock Blu-Ray boxset is out a while now (https://amzn.to/2Pxr0FV). As this is my favourite Hitchcock movie (well, this and "North by Northwest") I have taken it on myself to upload the definitive version of the scene, which I hope you enjoy. Rear Window is running as part of "Presenting Alfred Hitchcock" at the Light House Cinema in Dublin (https://lighthousecinema.ie/) throughout September and October 2019. It'a "must see" on the big screen, of only for this scene with one of the most beautiful women ever committed to film. I'll be there with my wife, also a huge fan of the movie.
