I thought I had positioned myself well to watch the pipers and drummers exit the esplanade, only to discover they were coming from behind me as well. I suddenly found myself pinned to one of the upright supports under the stands, although I managed to hit record in the press. As a result, I managed to capture this amazing moment where the two halves of the massed pipes and drums merged to thunder on down Castle Hill. This is not something you easily forget. It’s an absolute riot of sound as the music echo’s off the surrounding buildings: the rat-a-tat-tat of the snare drums get closer and closer, the bass drum boom, boom’s like thunder, while the pipers playing ‘Scotland the Brave’ and ‘The Black Bear’ fade away down the hill to the shouts of “Hoy-ee!” Interestingly, ‘The Black Bear’ is a sailors hornpipe dance and the ‘Hoy!’ shouted out is probably a derivative of ahoy or something… I’d love to hear if anyone knows more about this…?
