Located in the county of Surrey, and around 15 miles southwest of central London, is the town of Esher (pronounced 'EE-sher'). From the 13th century, Esher was home to a residence of the Bishops of Winchester, namely Esher Place. Among its historic residents was Cardinal Wolsey, who was also kept under house arrest here after his fall from power. Henry VIII subsequently seized the estate. Following the defeat of the Spanish Armada in the late 16th century, three Spanish admirals were held here. The current building was remodelled in the 19th century, and remains standing at the northwestern fringe of the town centre to this day (although not accessible to the public). Another building of historic note is Sandown House (featuring just after the 7-minute mark). This dates from the late 17th century, albeit remodelled in the 19th century. This was Esher's town hall between 1922 and 1974. Since the early 2000s, the building has been converted to luxury apartments. In 1838 the railway arrived in Esher courtesy of the London and Southampton Railway. The station of today forms part of the South West Main Line which runs between London Waterloo and Weymouth. At the heart of the town is Christ Church. This was built between 1853 and 1854 in order to serve the growing parish of Esher during the Victorian era.
