The English Civil War was a conflict between supporters of Charles I, the Royalists, and supporters of the English Parliament, the Parliamentarians. Tensions had existed between the two institutions throughout Charles' reign, chiefly over political and religious differences. By 1640, Parliament had been suspended and recalled by Charles a number of times. The conflict quickly escalted in January, 1642, when Charles left London for the safer North. During the course of that year, English cities quietly built up loyalties to either Charles or the Parliament.
