The execution of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII of England, took place on May 19, 1536, at the Tower of London. She was accused of adultery, incest, and treason, though many historians believe these charges were fabricated to remove her from power. Anne was arrested on May 2, 1536, and taken to the Tower of London. Her trial was held on May 15, where she was found guilty, despite a lack of concrete evidence. The sentence was death by beheading, but Henry VIII showed a small act of "mercy" by allowing her to be executed with a sword rather than the more common axe. On the morning of her execution, Anne wore a gray damask gown and a white coif. She gave a brief speech, praising the King and accepting her fate with dignity. The execution was carried out by a French swordsman, who swiftly beheaded her with a single stroke. Anne's body and head were placed in an arrow chest and buried in an unmarked grave in the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula, within the Tower of London. Her death paved the way for Henry VIII’s marriage to Jane Seymour, which took place just 11 days later.
